01
What does an in app licence actually cover?
Use on that platform, usually. The library exists because the platform negotiated rights for material posted there, so a clip carrying that music and reposted elsewhere may be outside the terms it was cleared under. Cross posting is exactly where this becomes a problem.
02
Where an in app licence reaches
Adding music inside the app you are posting to is the simplest way to use a track legally, and it ties that copy of the clip to that app.
| Use | Covered? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Posting on that platform | Yes | This is what the library is for |
| Downloading and posting elsewhere | Generally not | Also attaches that app's mark |
| A business or brand account | Often a smaller library | Check before building a format on a track |
| A clip that stays up for years | Until the track is withdrawn | Clips can be muted retroactively |
| Advertising | Usually excluded | Separate terms |
03
Keeping a clean copy for other platforms
If you add library music inside one app, the posted clip carries that music. For other platforms, upload a clean version without it, then add music from each platform's own library if you want. That keeps every version within the right licence.
Keep the clean master in a dedicated folder.
04
Business account restrictions
Business and brand accounts often have access to a narrower selection of library music, because commercial use requires different licences. Check which tracks are available to your account type.
Using personal-account tracks on a business account can cause problems.
05
When tracks disappear
Tracks can be removed from libraries when licences expire. Clips using them may be muted or have the music removed. There is little you can do, but keeping the clean version means you can repost with different music if needed.
Avoid relying on one track for important content.
06
Music and speech together
For clips built on speech, keep library music quiet in the background, or leave it out. Loud music competes with the voice and makes clips harder to follow, especially on phone speakers.
Test the balance on a phone.
07
Licensed music for cross-posting
If you want the same music on every platform, use a track licensed for use across platforms from a stock library. Keep the licence records.
This is simpler than managing several libraries.
08
Reading library terms
Each platform publishes terms for its music library. Read them once for each platform you use.
Terms change, so check occasionally.
09
Keep a clean copy for elsewhere
- Add music inside the app you are posting to. Not once, then reuse everywhere.
- Keep a clean version of the clip. It is what you post to the other feeds.
- Check commercial terms separately. Business accounts often have a narrower library.
Produce the clip clean and add music per platform.
Questions people ask
- Can I download the clip with the music and repost it?
- That is where the licence usually stops applying, and it also attaches the platform's mark to the clip.
- Is the library different for business accounts?
- On several platforms yes, and it is noticeably smaller. Worth checking before building a format around a track.
- Does trending audio help reach?
- It has helped historically on some feeds. It also ties the clip to one platform and dates it.
- What if the track is removed later?
- Clips using it can be muted retroactively, which is a real risk for anything meant to last.
- Is this legal advice?
- No. The platform's own music terms are what apply to your account.
