Everything else is loud. Yours is not

A viewer scrolling with the sound on has just heard something at full volume. If yours arrives noticeably quieter, they are gone before they decide it was worth hearing.

01

Why does one clip play quieter than the rest?

Usually because it was recorded quietly and never brought up. Platforms adjust loudness towards a common target, and they are better at turning loud material down than at lifting quiet material up, because raising a quiet recording also raises the noise underneath it.

02

Why the platform cannot rescue it

Loudness adjustment is much better at turning things down than at bringing things up, which is why quiet is the harder direction to be wrong in.

03

Recording at a healthy level

Set recording levels so normal speech is strong, peaking comfortably below the maximum. A recording that is too quiet has to be raised later, which also raises background noise and hiss. Getting the level right at the source avoids the problem entirely.

Test levels with a short recording before starting.

04

Bringing a quiet clip up

If a clip is already quiet, use a loudness tool to raise it to a consistent level rather than simply turning up the volume, which can cause distortion on peaks. A limiter prevents the loudest moments from clipping.

Listen afterwards for added noise.

05

Why platforms cannot fix it

Platforms may adjust loud clips downward, but they often do not raise quiet clips enough. A quiet clip stays quiet compared with others in the feed.

Make clips loud enough yourself.

06

Checking on a phone

Play your clip on a phone speaker right after another popular clip. If yours is noticeably quieter, raise it.

This simple comparison is surprisingly effective.

07

Microphone placement

A microphone close to the speaker captures a louder voice relative to background noise. Moving it closer is often the best fix for quiet recordings.

Clip-on microphones keep distance consistent.

08

Keeping levels consistent

Export all clips to a similar loudness so your series sounds consistent.

Save the setting in your export preset.

A consistent level across every clip makes your account feel dependable to viewers who scroll through several in a row.

09

Loud enough to survive a feed

  • Compare against something else in the feed. Judging in isolation tells you nothing; the feed is the context.
  • Record closer to the microphone. Distance is the usual reason a recording is quiet in the first place.
  • Raise the level before uploading. It is easier to fix in your own export than to rely on the platform.

Send a clip and play it after something else.

Questions people ask

Do platforms even out volume?
They move everything towards a common loudness, which handles loud material well and quiet material only partly.
Why does raising a quiet recording sound bad?
Because the noise floor comes up with it. Room hum and hiss become audible at the same time as the voice.
Is a quiet clip a lost cause?
Not if the voice is clean underneath. It is a lost cause when the noise is close to the voice in level.
What is the single best fix?
Move the microphone closer next time. It raises the voice without raising the room.
Does this affect the words on screen?
It can. Sound that is hard to hear is harder to write down accurately.
