The claim everyone repeats and nobody sources

You will be told a watermark buries your clip. The truth is narrower than that, and it depends entirely on whose mark it is.

01

Which watermarks actually matter?

A competing platform's mark is the one with a real basis. Feeds have openly preferred material made for them over material visibly recycled from a rival. A small mark from an editing tool is a different thing, and there is no published evidence that it carries the same treatment. The two get discussed as if they were one.

02

Stated against assumed

The free video carries a small corner mark at 720p. Paid plans carry none and produce up to 1080p.

03

Why other platforms' logos cause trouble

A logo from a competing app tells viewers and the platform that the clip was made somewhere else and carried over. Platforms have said they prefer content that feels native, and viewers tend to scroll past clips that look recycled. Removing that particular mark is a simple fix with a clear reason behind it.

The easiest way to avoid it is to keep your own clean export and upload that to every platform, rather than downloading a finished post from one app to upload to another.

04

Your own branding is different

A small logo or handle of your own is a common way to keep credit when clips are shared. Placed discreetly and consistently, it can help people find you after seeing a repost. Keep it small, away from the subject's face and clear of the areas apps cover with buttons.

Avoid large or animated marks that distract from the content. The clip itself is what earns attention, and branding that competes with it can reduce the time people spend watching.

05

Judging the effect on your own clips

If you want to know whether a mark affects your results, compare similar clips over several weeks rather than a single pair. Variation between individual posts is large, and one comparison says very little. Look at retention and shares, not just views.

Keep other factors steady while comparing: the same kind of content, similar lengths and similar posting times. Otherwise any difference you see is more likely to come from those than from the mark.

06

Where clean exports matter most

Clips made for clients, brands or partners should usually be clean. A tool's mark in a client's feed looks unfinished and can raise questions you would rather avoid. For personal experiments and drafts, a small mark matters much less.

Think about the final destination before deciding. The same clip may deserve a clean export for a partner and be fine as a draft for your own testing.

07

Know which mark you are worrying about

  • Check whose mark it is. A rival platform's logo and a tool's mark are different problems.
  • Remove rival platform marks. That is the case with an actual argument behind it.
  • Do not panic about tool marks. The evidence for those is far weaker than the discourse suggests.

Try the free video first and judge the mark yourself. Nothing to pay.

Questions people ask

Does the free video carry a mark?
Yes, a small one in the corner, at 720p. Paid plans have no mark and produce up to 1080p.
Is a competing platform's logo really penalised?
Platforms have said they favour material made for them, which is close enough to the same thing in practice. It is the best supported version of the claim.
Where would a mark hurt most?
On a clip that is otherwise identical to a hundred others. It becomes one more reason to scroll on.
Do these rules change?
Regularly, and they differ by platform and country. Anything you read about this, including here, is worth rechecking.
Is it worth paying to remove one?
If you are posting regularly, the mark is the least of what a paid plan changes. For occasional posting it matters less.
