03
Tagging links simply
Add three parameters to your link: source for the platform, medium for the type of placement, such as bio, and campaign for what you are promoting. Many free tools build these links for you. Use consistent names so reports group correctly.
Keep a list of the tagged links you use.
05
One link per platform
Use a different tagged link for each platform, so you can see which one sends the most visitors. Without separate tags, all social traffic blends together.
Update tags if you start a new campaign.
06
Reading the results
Look at visits, sign-ups or purchases by source each month. Compare platforms on the actions that matter to you, not just visits.
Results often differ from what view counts suggest.
07
Keeping links tidy
Tagged links can look long. A short link or link page can hide them, as long as it passes the parameters through. Check that it does.
Readable links build trust.
08
Starting small
Even tagging a single bio link gives useful information.
Expand once the habit is set.
Once you can see which platform sends visitors who actually sign up or buy, you can spend your posting time where it pays, instead of guessing from views alone.
09
Tag it, then verify it survived
- Tag every profile link. Source and medium at minimum, campaign if you run several.
- Use a different tag per platform. It is the only way to tell them apart afterwards.
- Check the tags survive the landing page. This is where most setups quietly fail.
Post one clip with a tagged link and check.
Questions people ask
- What breaks tagged links?
- A landing page that rewrites its own address before analytics reads it. The parameters disappear and everything is filed as direct, exactly as if they were never added.
- How would I know that is happening?
- If every campaign shows as direct despite tagged links, that is the signature. Server logs show the parameters that analytics never saw.
- Should I tag links in post text?
- On feeds where they are not clickable it makes little difference. The profile link is where the tagging pays.
- Do tags look untidy?
- They are visible in the address. A short link keeps the tags and hides them from the reader.
- Is it worth it for one link?
- It is what tells you which platform is actually working, which changes where you spend effort.
