A small tile in somebody's grid

Before a clip autoplays for anyone, it appears as a thumbnail on your profile and in search. That tile is much smaller than the clip and follows different rules.

01

What size is a short video thumbnail?

It is generated from the clip itself at the same 9:16 shape, commonly stored around 1080 by 1920, and then displayed as a tile a few hundred pixels across in a three column grid. At display size, only large text and a clear face survive, which is what should decide the frame you choose.

02

What survives at tile size

The tile is a few hundred pixels across. Only a clear face and a few large words survive it, and that is what should decide the frame you choose.

03

Choosing a strong frame

Pick a frame where the subject's face is clear, the expression is engaged and nothing is blurred. Frames mid-blink or mid-word look awkward at tile size. A moment of genuine reaction often makes the most inviting cover.

Check the chosen frame at small size before posting.

04

Text on covers

If you add text to a cover, keep it to a few large words in the middle of the frame. Profile grids may crop the top and bottom of vertical tiles, so text near the edges can be cut off. Bold, high-contrast text stays readable at small sizes.

A consistent cover style makes your grid look organised.

05

How grids crop tiles

Some profile grids show vertical clips as shorter tiles, hiding part of the top and bottom. Keep the key element of the cover in the central area so it survives the crop.

Preview your grid after posting to check.

06

Custom images versus frames

Some platforms allow uploading a separate cover image. A designed cover can look polished, but it should still reflect the clip honestly. Covers that promise something the clip does not deliver lose viewers' trust.

Frames from the clip itself are often enough.

07

Where covers matter most

Covers matter most on profile grids and in search results, where viewers choose what to tap. In the main feed, clips usually autoplay, so the cover matters less.

Focus cover effort on clips likely to be browsed later.

08

Consistency across a series

Use a similar cover style for each series so viewers recognise episodes in your grid.

Consistency makes a profile easier to explore.

09

Readable at the size it is shown

  • Pick a frame with a face or large text. Fine detail disappears entirely at tile size.
  • Check it in your own profile grid. That is where it is actually seen at real size.
  • Keep the important part central. Grids sometimes crop the edges of a tile.

Post one clip and look at your own grid.

Questions people ask

Can I choose the frame?
On most platforms yes, at posting time, by selecting a cover from the clip. That choice belongs to the app rather than to the clip file.
Does a custom image work better?
On platforms that allow uploading one, a designed cover can be clearer. On feeds that only offer a frame from the video, choosing a strong frame is the whole lever.
How much does the thumbnail matter?
More on profile and search than in the feed, because feed viewers meet the clip already playing rather than as a tile.
Should text be in the thumbnail?
A few large words work. Anything longer is unreadable at grid size.
Do the clips include a cover image?
The clip is a video file, so the cover is chosen when you post it rather than being part of the file.
